An aspiring clown grappling with her gender identity combats a fascistic caped crusader in writer-director Vera Drew's uproariously subversive queer coming-of-age origin story.
Multi-hyphenate satirist Vera Drew stars as an aspiring clown grappling with gender identity as she dreams of being cast on UCB Live, a popular TV sketch comedy series populated by a cast of Jokers and Harlequins. What started out as a dare to re-edit Todd Phillip's Oscar-nominated Joker (2019) fast turned into a fully-fledged standalone project - combining clips of Jokers past and present, fan videos, movies featuring clowns, a multitude of additional scenes shot with a small crew in the midst of a global pandemic and content from 150 additional quarantined animators, musicians, filmmakers, and actors collaborating remotely across three continents, most of them queer-identifying or trans, The People's Joker is a radical reimagining of Joker narratives to tell the story of one woman's trans experience. Completely unauthorized and totally illegal, this near-indescribable film features cameos from Tim Heidecker, David Liebe Hart, Bob Odenkirk, Cricket Arrison and Maria Bamford, among many, many others.
"...parodies some of pop culture's most famous heroes and villains with such authenticity that it, frankly, improves upon many of their contemporary corporately owned permutations."
